Overview

Skatez ("we," "our," or "us") respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application.

Quick Summary: We use your location locally to show nearby parks. We collect minimal analytics (crash reports, performance data) through third-party services to improve app stability. We don't collect personal data like names or emails. No data selling.

Information We Collect

1. Location Information

What we collect: Your device's current GPS coordinates when you grant location permission.

How we use it: To calculate distances to skate parks and sort them by proximity to you.

Where it's stored: Only on your device. Your location is NEVER transmitted to our servers or any third parties.

Control: You can disable location services in iOS Settings at any time.

2. Usage Data

We collect limited usage data to improve app stability and performance:

  • Crash reports: When the app crashes, technical details are sent to New Relic
  • Performance metrics: App load times, screen transitions (no personal data)
  • Error tracking: Failed image loads, network errors (URLs only, no personal data)
  • Feature usage: Which features are enabled/disabled via Statsig (no personal identification)

What we DON'T collect: Names, emails, search history, browsing patterns, or any personally identifiable information.

3. Personal Information

We do not collect:

  • Names
  • Email addresses
  • Phone numbers
  • Payment information
  • Photos or videos you view
  • Search history
  • Any other personally identifiable information

Third-Party Services

Firebase Realtime Database

We use Google Firebase to store and sync skate park data (names, locations, photos, descriptions). Firebase may collect:

  • Device type and OS version (for service reliability)
  • App version information
  • Database connection metadata

Firebase does NOT collect:

  • Your personal information
  • Your location
  • Your usage patterns

Apple Maps

When you tap "Directions," Apple Maps opens with the park's coordinates. Apple's privacy policy applies when using Maps.

New Relic

We use New Relic for crash reporting, performance monitoring, and error tracking. New Relic collects:

  • Device information (model, OS version, app version)
  • Crash logs and stack traces
  • Performance metrics (load times, response times)
  • Custom events (e.g., failed image loads with URLs)

New Relic does NOT collect: Your name, email, location, or any personal identifiers.

Statsig

We use Statsig for feature management and A/B testing. Statsig collects:

  • Anonymous device identifiers
  • Feature flag exposures (which features you see)
  • App events (feature usage, no personal data)

Statsig does NOT collect: Personal information, location, or browsing history.

Data Storage

Local Storage (Your Device)

  • Park data: Cached locally for offline access using Firebase offline persistence
  • App preferences: Search radius, filters (stored in iOS UserDefaults)
  • Location: Used temporarily for distance calculations, never stored

Remote Storage (Firebase)

  • Skate park database: Park names, locations, photos, descriptions (public data)
  • No personal data: We do not store any user-specific information on Firebase

How We Use Your Information

Location Data

Your location is used ONLY to:

  • Calculate distances to skate parks
  • Sort parks by proximity to you
  • Display "XX km away" badges

Location calculations happen entirely on your device. Your coordinates are never sent to us or anyone else.

Park Data

Skate park information (photos, descriptions, locations) is:

  • Publicly available data sourced from the skateboarding community
  • Stored in Firebase for fast access
  • Cached on your device for offline use

Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do NOT sell, rent, or trade your information with anyone.

We share limited technical data with service providers:

  • New Relic: Crash reports and performance metrics (no personal data)
  • Statsig: Feature flag exposures and usage events (anonymous)
  • Firebase: App connection metadata (device type, OS version)

We may also disclose information if:

  • Required by law or legal process
  • Necessary to protect our rights or safety
  • Part of a business transfer (merger, acquisition)

Children's Privacy

Skatez does not knowingly collect data from children under 13. Our app does not require age verification as we collect no personal information. Parents can safely allow children to use the app.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access: Request what data we have (none, except cached park data on your device)
  • Delete: Uninstall the app to remove all locally stored data
  • Control location: Disable location services in iOS Settings → Privacy → Location Services → Skatez
  • Opt out: Simply don't grant location permission when prompted

Data Security

We take security seriously:

  • Firebase uses industry-standard encryption (HTTPS/TLS)
  • No sensitive personal data is collected or stored
  • Location data never leaves your device
  • App follows iOS security best practices

Offline Functionality

Skatez caches park data locally using Firebase offline persistence. This means:

  • Park data is stored in your device's secure app sandbox
  • Data persists between app launches for faster loading
  • You can browse parks without internet
  • Cached data is deleted when you uninstall the app

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

If you are a California resident:

  • We do not sell personal information
  • We collect no personal information as defined by CCPA
  • You have no need to opt-out as there's nothing to opt out of

European Users (GDPR)

If you are in the European Union:

  • We do not process personal data as defined by GDPR
  • Location data is processed locally on your device
  • No data is transferred to data controllers or processors
